Südafrika hat eine der höchsten Raten an tödlichen Verkehrsunfällen der Welt. Neben altersschwachen Autos spielt auch der Genuß von Alkohol eine große Rolle. Alleine am Osterwochende wurden 203 Menschen auf Südafrikas Straßen getötet, im ganzen Jahr 2009 13.900.
Die Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) veröffentlichte jetzt eine Studie, die besagt, daß zwischen 1998 und 2003 in Südafrika die Hälfte aller Führerscheine illegal erworben wurden. Ursache sei die Abschaffung des bewährten Fahrschultests in jener Zeit.
Laut Aussage eines Eigentümers einer Fahrschule aus Kapstadt seien es jetzt diese Fahrer, die aufgrund fehlender Fahrkenntnisse eine Vielzahl der Unfälle bauen .
Managing Director of a driving skills company and motoring expert, Rob Handfield-Jones, says the root of the problem is the abolition of the driving instructor’s test.
“That test was a very tough test indeed. If you did not know how to instruct a learner driver properly, you would not get an instructor’s certificate – and that was done away with”, said Handfield-Jones.
“We have been estimated that between 1998 and 2003, half of all licenses issued, were irregular in some way – bought, false or illegal and those people are currently on the road in the country, causing the crashes we see now”, he concluded.
Earlier today, Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele has called on South Africans to be part of the solution to save lives on the roads. Preliminary reports indicate at least 203 fatal accidents occurred on the country’s roads during the Easter weekend.
