Table Mountain is in the running to be named one of the New7Wonders of Nature in 2011, but will only achieve this status if enough votes are received.
The Swiss-based New7Wonders Foundation is running a worldwide campaign to choose the world’s top seven natural wonders, and Table Mountain has made it onto the list of 28 finalists out of an initial list of 261 sites – the only South African entry to get this far. Mount Kilimanjaro is the only other African contender.
Even though Table Mountain beat famous mountains such as Mount Everest, K2 and Mount Olympus onto the shortlist, it is currently ranked between 14 and 28, and can only move higher if it receives more votes.
Voting continues until November 2011, and the announcement will be made on 11/11/11.
