Visa

Basic information to the theme of entry formalities

Firstly, as a Western European state resident you can entry every time in South Africa for 3 months (90 days). This period is for everyone available. By entry you have to state your reasons for it (either job-related or holidays) and you have to show a ticket for your return flight attesting you that you will fly back within the next 3 months. That’s all!

Extension of the tourist visa for the next 3 months

If you really like Cape Town that you want to stay for more time in “mother city”, than you can extend the first 3 months for more 3 months again. That works in the following way:

  1. You have to apply for the extension at the latest at the end of the second month; otherwise the application will be rejected.
  2.  For the extension you need a return flight ticket certifying that you will leave within that extended period. You need also a statement of your bank that you have enough capital. If the bank doesn’t want to certificate this letter, an abstract of the account and of course the passport is enough.
  3. You go to the “South Africa Department of Home Affairs” in the City Bowl – the best is very early around half past 8. There you can get the “Application Form” which you have to fill out with your data (habitation, flight data, personal data). With the filled out “Application Form” and the documents of point 2 you are going to the next counter and hand in all these papers. Secondary you have to pay unique 425 Rand. You will get an acknowledgment of receipt and that was the first step.
  4. After 2 weeks you have to go again, as well early in the morning to collect the stamp for your passport. You are going with the note to the nice woman behind the counter and she will check your folder and if all documents are right. When this is the case you will get your stamp – THAT’S ALL!

More than 6 months in Cape Town – this works too!

You receive a so-called Study Permit, if you can exhibit following points:

  •          Booking confirmation of the school / university (confirmation about courses and accommodation)
  •          Attestation of your health
  •          Evidence of insurability
  •          Proof of enough capital
  •          Certificate of good contuct

The total costs for that visa are around 400 €!!
