Every tour to Robben Island includes a meeting with a former prisoner of the prison island who tells us about the conditions at that time. It’s a tragical factual report about the unscrupulousness of a regime which got rid of its political enemies over here.
After arrival on Robben Island, the prisoners have first of all been registered. According to the apartheid logics, they were divided into various categories, which depended on their colour of skin. There haven’t been any white prisoners on this island, which was only provided for Blacks, Coloureds and Asians. Every prisoner received a registration number. Die last two numbers meant the year of arrival, the first numbers meant the number of prisoner of the current year. Nelson Mandela had number 466. Prisoner in the year of 1964, so it was 46664 .

The Nelson Mandela Gateway is the only starting point for a tour to Robben Island. The newly contructed building at the Waterfront, right next to the Clock Tower, is always full of people. You can get there first information about Robben Island, look at photos and buy your tickets. The tours are often fully booked – especially during the main season. With a little luck, you can get a ticket that has been returned. The crossing takes place on a modern ferry, which was sometimes also mentioned negatively in the news.
It takes 30 minutes to the little harbor on the island. While crossing, you get a fantastic view of Cape Town’s Skyline with the Waterfront, the Table Mountain and the Lion’s Head. With a little luck, you can also see seals and even dolphins can cross your way.
At the entrance of the island, which is now declared as World Culture Heritage, there is the famous gate, which every prisoner had to walk through .

With the start of the Soccer World Cup in Cape Town the service of public transport has improved. The majority of the mini buses now matches the quality requirements of a European tourist. Between Sea Point and the Waterfront run large busses on Beach Road at 15 minute intervals that do not have to shy away from comparison with the European city buses. The buses start at sunrise and operate against 11 pm.
The big advantage of using that service is that they stop in front of the Waterfront. Mini buses only stop on Main Road about 500 meters away from the shopping and leisure destination Waterfront. Strangely, the popularity to potential passengers is quite low.

Since the 90’s the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront has been a tourist attraction beside the Table Mountain. The former harbour is a must to visit by every tourist to Cape Town. There is a large string of shops (about 300), hotels, restaurants, pubs and museums together around several harbour basins. Best is to visit the Waterfront in the late afternoon in summer. If you reach the Waterfront you should first do a tour to have a view of the Waterfront. A comfortable walk with some little breaks takes about 2 hours. Most of the visitors walk on the area near the open-air theater. At some days, mostly Sundays there are performed concerts. Suddenly the holiday-maker sees the Victoria Basin and promenade in front of it.
The Victoria Basin is the biggest harbor basin which is sometimes used for non-touristic activities. At two huge moorings you can often see cruise liners that dock here on their way to East Africa. Next to the fishing boats the quay dock lots of pleasure steamers who offer lots of tours to the harbour area as well as to Table Bay. Catamarans and sailing ships are recommendable. An unforgettable event is a sunset tour with a great view to the Table Mountain .

The Table Mountain rises 1086 metre from the sea and is with that the further visible landmark of Cape Town. To the city of Cape Town a 500 metre steep wall forms the grand final of the table mountain. The impressive façade has been flanked with the 668 metre high Lions Head and the 1000 metre high Devils Peak. At the beginning of the steep face leads up to 1200 metre a cable railway which turns in itself. Another option to reach the top of the mountain is to use the various trails. The western flank has been formed by the steep face of the 12 Apostel which is not less imposing. Towards the south the plateau drops gradually but in the east exists a gigantic view to the False Bay, the southern districts including the Townships and the Hottentots Holland Mountains in the background.
The view from upstairs down to Cape Town is indescribably beautiful. After leaving the mountain railway it is possible to enjoy calmly the view to the city centre with the Signal Hill and the districts at the Atlantic coast. In some distance away you can see Robben Island. If you turn some metre towards the West you can see the beaches of Camps Bay and Clifton. Now most of the visitors realize with what beauty the city is blessed. A lot of photos will be taken.

Robben Island, the World Heritage place, came in the last few years, regularly in the news because of the poor services of the ferries and because non-compliance with timetables.
