Insurance
The only insurance is a health insurance which will be definitively recommended. The medical supply in Cape Town has the European standard, but just for people with money. You have to pay the complete care in advance, but you will get the money back with the right insurance. You can have a cheap insurance about the ADAC, apart from that a lot of contractors are offering an insurance for circa 50 € per month.
English
Most of the people in Cape Town are speaking perfect English. A lot of the younger people have actually been in England for some years, so here you get to know a kind of British English with a South African touch. Many South Africans with British passports are living here, who are often visited by relatives. The English are the majority of guests following from the Germans. Nearly everyone is speaking Afrikaans, either as a native language or as a lingua franca. In stores or restaurants they are talking to you always in English.
Other Nationalities
You are meeting very often following nationalities in Cape Town: Brazilians, South Koreans, Angolans, Gabonese, Germans, people from Switzerland, Dutch and Arabians in July/August. Many students of the neighbour countries are visiting firstly a language school and then they are studying at one of the universities in Cape Town. Brazilians, South Koreans and Arabians prefer just language schools. By Germans are both groups: visitors for language schools and also a lot of interns or volunteers in different facilities. Particularly, many Germans are in Cape Town at February and March.
Language schools
The most language schools are in the city centre, in Sea Point or Green Point. In the majority of cases you are living in the same district like the language school, except for the near to the city centre, because there are flats hardly existent.
Booking of a half-board by visiting a language school
It’s always cheaper to book half-board. But you don’t have to expect the same standard like in a boarding-house. Normally to your breakfast you will get soluble coffee, toast and jam or as another option corn flakes. The dinner is always warm and relatively simple. The hirers have a budget of 3 € per day and person and so it’s very difficult to pay some specifics with it. It’s not a recommendation to have more than 4 weeks of half-board, because after that you can’t see the food anymore and it’s better to become a self-supporter. One point more you have to consider: There are host families who are eating at 6 p.m. and if somebody is too late, he won’t get any food. The reason: You have to follow the family rules.
Opportunities for sports
At the seafront you can jog in the morning or in the evening or just have a walk. The total length is about 5 km and there is enough distance to the car traffic. During the day it’s too hot for sports outside. There is a huge public swimming pool in size of Olympia in Sea Point where you can do your laps every morning and evening. Furthermore there is a little gym in Sea Point and a huge one in Green Point. It’s the best I have ever seen in my life. There are all courses and equipment which you can imagine plus sauna, tennis, swimming pool and squash.
Daily travels
The best way is to book on location, because there the choice is much bigger than booking about catalogue in Germany and in the normal case it’s cheaper.
Hire car
There is nothing to be said against booking about a local car rental. The standards are the same and nobody is cheating on you. The hire price is essential and depending on the currency rate the German as well as the local offer can be cheaper.
