Would you like to participate in the biggest timed walking event in the world? If your answer is yes, get yourself an entry form for the Discovery Cape Times Big Walk, which takes place on Sunday 14 November 2010. It’s South Africa’s oldest walk and takes place annually in the Mother City.
The Spartan Harriers Club started it all in 1903 and today the Big Walk is as popular as ever. With various routes and distances to choose from, there’s something for everyone. There are ten distances to choose from this year, with all routes leading to the finish at Rhodes High School in Mowbray. Check out the options below, along with starting times (subject to change):
* 80km: St Georges Grammar School, Mowbray – 03h45
* 50km: Fish Hoek Beach – 06h15
* 30km: Long Beach, Simon’s Town – 09h00
* 25km: Fish Hoek Beach – 08h30
* 20km: Cnr Firgrove/Spaanschemat Rd, Constantia – 08h00
* 13km: Cnr Main/Ladies Mile Rd, Retreat – 07h30
* 12km: Paved Walkway, Greenpoint Park, Greenpoint – 07h00
* 11km: NY49 Sports Fields, Gugulethu – 07h30
* 10km: Grand Parade, Cape Town City – 08h00
* 5km: Boundary Rd, Newlands – 10h30
Entry forms are available from all Western Cape Totalsports stores and also at Independent Newspapers (122 St. Georges Mall, Cape Town). Every year the event raises funds for charity and this year, the Steenberg Foundation and The Red Cross Society will be the main beneficiaries.
