Cape Town Backpacker

Cool Jazz

Our CoolJazz Backpacker Lodge in Sea Point is the closest Backpacker to the beautiful beaches of Clifton and Camps Bay. Reaching the trendy and there-to-be-seen beaches of Clifton and Camps Bay is an easy walk or drive. Furthermore there is an Olympic Swimming Pool just a 2-minutes walk away and a beautiful promenade that draws locals and visitors for walking and jogging or just people-watching. The promenade runs the length of Sea Point’s beachfront, from Bantry Bay to Mouille Point and is a hub of activity, particularly in the early morning or late afternoons to watch the sun set right next to the waters of the Atlantic Seaboard. The city centre and the waterfront are a 10-minute drive away.

All rooms in CoolJazz Sea Point are in two- or three-room units with an own bathroom and kitchen.

Carnival in Cape Town

Born out of a vision to have a street spectacular in Cape Town, which measures up to the standard and quality of other great Carnivals in the world, the Cape Town Carnival started with a pilot in 2010, when 2 500 community costumed performers took to the streets of Cape Town in song and dance in a riot of colour.
Behind this event was hours of preparation in rehearsal, costume-making, music production and float-building. It enabled a torrent of local talent to strut the streets and for a huge audience to enjoy all that the Carnival has to offer.
What we believed then and what we see now, after the success of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, was the ability of events such as this to being about real and significant social cohesion and sense of community belonging.
The participants of the Carnival are drawn from more than 23 local communities from the Cape Town Metro and included people from every walk of life.
Based on lessons learnt during last year’s pilot Carnival in Long St, the 2011 Carnival will see the launch of a much grander Carnival experience. It will have all the glamour and sensuality of Rio but with a distinctive African beat.

The Carnival Parade will start at 8.30pm on the Saturday March 19 and proceed down the “Carnival Corridor” in Long Street, through the purpose-built gateway that will be ablaze with colour, lights, lasers and dancers, welcoming all to the Carnival.
150 Harley-Davidsons will precede the event, heralding the grand entrance of nine spectacular floats and over 2 000 dancers in elaborate and colourful costumes. Pulsating music from the floats will provide the rhythm for the dancers, and spotlights, big screens and giant puppets will add to the magical atmosphere.
As the last float passes through the purpose-built exit at the top end of the carnival corridor, DJ Fresh will turn up the beat and the thousands of revellers will party the night away in a vibrant street party.

The CoolJazz Backpacker Lodge offers you for this Carnival Weekend special rates in our Lodge in Sea Point. Check it out on www.cooljazzlodge.com. Book now and celebrate with us the southafrican Carnival!

Jazz vibe comes to town

On the 25th and 26th of march the 12th Cape Town International Jazz Festival will take place in the Cape Town International Convention Centre.
The Cape Town International Jazz Festival has grown into a hugely successful international event since its inception in the year 2000. Attendance figures have increased from the initial 14 000 to 34 000 in the last 11 years.

Melodytrip has ranked this proudly South African event as No.4 in the world, outshining events such as Switzerland’s Montreaux Festival and the North Sea Jazz Festival in Holland.

The festival’s winning formula of bringing more than 40 International and Local artists to perform over two days on five stages has earned it the status of being the most prestigious event on the African continent.

If you are seraching for a nice friendly accomodation during the Jazz Festival come and visit the CoolJazzLodge Backpacker in the heart of Sea Point. We offer you rooms from 100R and you will enjoy it to get to know our other guests from around the world.
We are looking forward to welcome you!

East African Bazaar

The East African Bazaar in the Long Market Street is perfect for a snack or lunch because you can easily get a minibus for example from Sea Point to the city to Long Street which is just a few meters away from the Bazaar.
There you will find everything which the oriental cuisine can offer and everything at reasonable prices. Indian, Turkish or Arabic. For example, you get a chicken kebab with salad and french fries for 30Rand and the portions are really sufficient.
Hope to see you at the next lunch break ??;-)

Cape Town – The City of Diversity

If you get the opportunity to travel to South Africa and particularly to Cape Town, take this chance. Probably you get this chance once in a lifetime.
Arriving in Cape Town you will have no idea what you want to do first, because there are so many attractive destinations in and around Cape Town.
A must is of course to enjoy the views from Table Mountain and Lions Head or to take a stroll along the Waterfront and take advantage of the beautiful weather at one of the many beaches like Camps Bay, Clifton and Llandudno. Besides, you can visit the “Two Oceans Aquarium” and come in contact with locals at the Longstreet in bars, restaurants and clubs at Longstreet.
If you stay during your stay in Cape Town in one of the many backpackers you can meet a lot of new people from different cultures as well.

The most of the backpackers have a bar and lounge and there are taking place many actions, such as traditional braais together with all the guests.

Recommendable is the CoolJazz Backpacker Lodge, centrally located in the suburb of Sea Point. In Sea Point you have the perfect mix of shopping, bars, swimming pool and beach.

No more excuses

A project started by Maria.

“We started in 2009 to help kids to go to school. With fundings that we received we were able to pay the school fees for 25 children. Now, in 2011 we also would like to continue with our project and provide school fees for at least 40 kids.

In the beginning we were shocked that so many children had to drop out of school or weren’t able to go to school at an early age only because their parents or family members couldn’t pay school fees of 30 or 70 EUR per year. It continued with the school transport and the empty stomaches of our little fellas cause problems as they were sitting hungry at school unable to follow the teacher.

In 2009 we had 3 people (incl. me) working on this project.

Underprivileged children will benefit from this project 100%. We already received 40 applications for this school year from children by the age of 7 – 17 years. Donations that come in will be used to pay the outstanding schoolfees directly to the schools. Furthermore, we continue to set up study groups during the holidays and activities for the kids. In April 2010 we visited the Cape Town Aquarium and we hope that we can organise more outings soon.
It is also planned to provide one meal per day and if things run well we can even help with the transport fees to school.

Our biggest challenge is to collect enough donations to be able to provide for our children.

Incoming donations will help us to continue with our project for 2010 Currently, everything is on standby because of missing funding.”
