Beaches of Cape Town

One of the reasons that Cape Town has the title as one of the most beautiful cities in the world are the various beaches. The city is blessed by a multitude of beaches, which are in close proximity to the center. It’s a question of:

   – Camps Bay and Clifton Beach on the Atlantic coast south of the City Bowl
   - Bloubergstrand north of the City Bowl
   - Muizenberg in False Bay

Anyone who will take a refreshing dip in the sea, but hasn’t informed in advance, is surprised by the icy water. Even at air temperatures of 35 degrees has the ocean the range of 15-16 degrees. Except Muizenberg, which is just 45 minutes by train from the city centre away and can be used with comfortable 20 degrees. Persons who actually swim in the sea are usually central and northern Europeans. South Africans and Brazilians would not go into the water at such temperatures. The most important job on the beach sunbathing is seeing and being seen. The biggest disadvantage of all beaches is the lack of any shadow. A stay of 3 hours without a rented or purchased umbrella is already a top performance.

Clifton Beach

The beaches of Clifton are the shortest route. From Sea Point it takes just 15 minutes by minibus or car. If the weather is permitting, it is extremely difficult to find a parking space, so a trip by minibus in the season and especially at the weekend can be recommended. From the road it goes down several levels before you reach the beach. In fact, there are four, called Clifton 1 – 4. The latter is the largest and supposedly the most beautiful, but this is a matter of taste. There, you play volleyball and other ball sports. Each of these beaches has its own clientele, in reality you notice just little differences. The first three idyllic beaches are lined with rocks and a lot smaller. With rising wind, which happened fairly often, you are there much more protected. A negative point of all beaches is the lack of any gastronomy, the only possibility is the acquisition of drinks, snacks and ice from various mobile dealers. All beaches are monitored by lifeguards. It is not usual and not allowed to stay still on the beach after dark. As soon as the sun goes down, the beach clears in no time at all. Then you have still enough time to take a nice walk back to Sea Point. The trail can be walked safely even after dark.

Camps Bay

There is hardly a more brilliant location for a city than that of Camps Bay. In the background are nearly 1000m high side of Table Mountain, called the 12 Apostles, and to the front the road in a Miami Beach style with palm trees and miles of beach. At the sight you can understand why this area is one of the most expensive of Africa. The main street is lined with cafes, restaurants, bars and clubs. During the day you are drinking a coffee and taking a light meal, in the evening it’s a cocktail and a fine diner. Still later you go into one of the clubs. Camps Bay itself is only about 5 minutes next to Clifton, therefore also convenient. Compared to Clifton Beach, the open location on the beach makes it very susceptible to sudden wind attacks, which unfortunately often happens. But this is the only point, which is assessed as negative
